Event Update

The following guidelines have been prepared as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic with changes that you can expect to see on event day. The safety and health of our athletes is our top priority. All the guidelines and rules placed by the city of Hermosa Beach, County of Los Angeles and USA Triathlon will be adhered to. Our staff will take all health & safety precautions to make sure you have the best race experience possible. We appreciate your patience and support during this difficult time as we work to determine the safest path forward.

             OUR ATHLETES

  • Event information will be frequently updated on our website. Athletes are encouraged to review ongoing race weekend communications on all Hermosa Beach Triathlon emails, website, and social media for the most up to date policies as they relate to COVID-19.
  • Athletes should pre-monitor their health status continuously for 14 days before the event including monitoring symptoms and taking temperature.
  • Athletes must complete a pre-race medical questionnaire in the week prior to racing that may be reviewed.
  • Athletes are encouraged to bring their own hydration and nutrition for the event. Post-race pre-packaged snacks will still be available to all athletes.
  • No Pre-Race Meeting to avoid gatherings on event day. All Pre-Race Meeting Safety Guidelines will be sent out via email to athletes prior to event day.

             OUR VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF

  • Staff and volunteers will be asked to stay home if they feel sick, test positive, or are in the CDC group of people who are more at risk for COVID-19.
  • All volunteers and staff will be subject to temperature screening on event day.
  • Staff and volunteers will complete education in proper health and hygiene protocols.

         OVERALL MODIFICATIONS

  • Expanded venue spacing and increased signage to promote social distancing.
  • Time slots will be implemented for Early Packet Pickup on Saturday.
    • Participants can also opt to get their packet mailed for a small fee.
  • Mask requirement prior to the start of the event.
  • Reduction of physical interaction between participants, volunteers, and staff on event day.
  • Additional sanitation – hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes found throughout the event.
  • Aid stations to be primarily self-serve with mini water bottles and fewer volunteers.

         WHAT TO EXPECT ON EVENT DAY:

  • Registration and Transition Area
    • Masks are required prior to the start of the event.
    • No event day registration – online registration will close on Friday, October 9, 2020 at midnight PST.
    • Adjustments will be made to the arrival flow, including entry and exit points.
    • Increased bike rack spacing within the Transition Area.
    • No body marking to minimize touch points.
    • Relay Team participation is being evaluated and may be removed to minimize touch points.
  • Start and Swim Course
    • Expansion of swim start area.
    • Time Trial Start may be implemented to allow social distancing.
    • Wave size, start procedures, and time between waves may be adjusted to decrease congestion.
  • Bike and Run Course
    • Athletes allowed to wear face masks.
    • Athletes encouraged to bring their own hydration and nutrition.
    • Athletes recommended to avoid running directly behind one another.
  • Finish and Awards
    • Athletes will be encouraged to move quickly through the finish line. Congregation near the finish chute will not be allowed.
    • Athletes are instructed not to hug, high five, or touch each other at any point before, during or after the event.
    • All post-race food items will be pre-packaged, sealed and self-serve.
    • Awards ceremony will comply with USAT guidelines and follow social distancing and expansion of space IF the ceremony is held.
